Unsurveilled is a nonpartisan civil-liberties movement opposing warrantless government surveillance of people suspected of no crime. This site is its public home.

The position is simple to state: investigate suspects; don’t surveil everyone. We support law enforcement investigating crime, and using modern technology, through lawful process. We oppose systems that collect, retain, search, or analyze the movements of ordinary people merely because the technology makes it possible. The full statement of principles is on the Mission page.

What we’re doing first

The immediate issue is automated license plate readers, and the immediate place is Arizona’s East Valley — seven municipalities that share data, share commuters, and watch each other’s council votes. It is the proving ground for a model we intend to make reusable across Arizona and beyond. The first substantive project is the factual record for each jurisdiction: cameras, contracts, costs, retention, data-sharing, search policies, audit records, and documented outcomes, presented fairly and sourced completely.

The statewide campaign is Warrant Required — opposition to warrantless networked ALPR surveillance regardless of vendor.

How this site works

This site practices what it advocates. It sets no cookies, runs no trackers, and loads no third-party scripts. There is no analytics platform and no email-capture pop-up.
